Austin Air Pet Machine Review

We have had 2 labs for less than a year...the pet machine was bought shortly after the arrival of the second one (a 6 year lab-already house broken!). I felt like the machine worked for less than a week to rid house of "dog smell". There has never been a smell of "accidents" - just that dog odor that I never wanted. We have hard wood floors so there is no carpet to trap odor. Dogs are not on furniture. Machine is by their beds. Beds are vacuumed almost daily and washed often. We vacuum all floors daily. Made mistake of emailing Austin Air directly to complain and was completely dismissed. (even though I was in my 30 day window to return). I did hear from a nicer lady from the place I actually bought it from (through austin air's website?) and she convinced austin air to send me a new filter. It has not changed anything. For all its promises, I cannot say it produces any results on any of them. I am very disappointed with it.

Venta LW44 Air Humidifier and Purifier All-in-one Review

Yesterday, the motor in my Venta unit began making a grinding sound after nearly six year of flawless operation.I called Venta customer service this afternoon.After wating a rather long time on hold, I was connected to a very pleasant man, George, who asked me to put the phone next to the motor so he could hear the noise. I did, and he did.

Without a moment's hesitation, George said he would have a new motor shipped at no cost to me, and that delivery could be expected within 5 - 7 business days.

It's always a pleasant surprise to find a company standing unquestioningly behind their warranty.If only more understood that's all it takes to create loyal customers.

I'm pleased to report , my review, below, is still true in every detail.This product has been a terrific investment.

I live in a desert~like New York City apartment and have owned my Venta Air Washer for almost exactly two years.During this time it has been operating on the "high" setting, 24 hours per day, seven days per week.The Air Washer lives up to all of the manufacturer's claims.

The Air Washer is a product of fanatical German engineering,over~design and bullet~proof construction, which accounts for it's rather grotesque price.However, I have owned products of inferior engineering and construction that have had to be replaced after one or two seasons.It is obvious I will own my Air Washer for many years to come.

The principles of operation could not be more simple (it's like a High School science project developed into a luxury product):

1) A fan blows room air straight down into a reservoir of water.

2) In this reservoir of water, a few dozen disks are slowly rotating to multiply the surface area that is wet.

3) Because you are blowing air onto a enlarged wet surface you are multiplying the rate of evaporation.

4) Humidified air is exhausted out of the Air Washer through vents in the side.

THIS WORKS.

On the "high" setting the water reservoir needs to be refilled daily in my apartment (this is highly dependent on your local weather or heating cycle).I end up carrying a couple gallons of water to the device or carrying the device to the bathtub and then back to its spot in my livingroom.

The design of the Air Washer is "neutral."It sits unobtrusive and un~noticed in a corner.It is nearly silent.It is built like a tank: It would be a challenge to damage this product on purpose.

Why not Five Stars?

The Venta Air Washer consumes expendables.You need a water treatment solution to prevent mineral deposits forming on the rotating disks mentioned above (weekly).AND you need a periodic cleaning solution to remove deposits that develop pn the bottoms and walls of the reservoir.I have tried operating the Air Washer without these things.They are required for optimal performance.

Like the device itself, the Venta treatment and cleaning solutions work perfectly and simply.But, THE EXPENDIBLES ARE EXPENSIVE!Assume youy will spend US$50.00 per year.

Also, you would think that for a company selling a FIVE HUNDRED DOLLAR humidifier, the Venta aroma therapy scents would smell a bit less like a Central American bordello (not that I've ever seen one of those).Skip these even if they're free samples.

If you want the very best at any price, buy this product.

Blueair 501 Air Purification System Review

I have tried many types of purifiers over the years.My allergies would always lay me out and severely impact my quality of life.After becoming disillusioned by the Honeywell HEPAs and the Orek (eegads never buy the Orek!!!!!) I started a very detailed research project.

Consistently, the BlueAir purifiers were at the top of every review and recommendation list.The only things beating them out were either attached to a house (I live in an apartment) or over $800.While the BlueAir itself is not cheap, I decided that my health was not worth saving the few hundred dollars another Honeywell would save me.

It was the best $500 I ever spent.

It runs quiet, it moves huge volumes of air and the filters are obviously doing their job.My allergies have subsided to a point where I no longer take meds!

The unit has 4 speed settings, the lowest being called "HEPASilent" which is barely audible, and the highest being much too loud to use during sleep.I find the 3rd setting to be the best performance to noise ratio.I can sleep perfectly fine at this level and I am a fairly light sleeper.

The unit can be heavy for lifting purposes, but comes on casters so you can easily wheel it around to different rooms.

If I had any gripes about this purifier, it would be the lack of a pre-filter.The unit essentially sucks air from the bottom and shoots it out the top, front, and back.Dust accumulates on the metal housing frame and must be cleaned during each filter change.Cleaning the housing can be a tad difficult unless you have a very slender vacuum hose.

The other potentially annoying thing is the fairly bright blue power light on the side.I hardly even notice it after over a year of use.

Austin Air HealthMate+ Jr. Review

The unit was shipped to me directly from the manufacturer in a sturdy box. It is light enough for me to carry from room to room. The noise level is loud at the highest setting but I have no problem falling asleep or watching TV when set at the slowest speed.

I have been using this air purifier for a little over a month now. No complain. I have allergies but not the indoor type. It has something to do with polluted outdoor air. Therefore, I always keeps windows and doors close which leads to a stuffy house. Operating the central A/C or heat will take care of the stale air but expensive. The HealthMate takes care of this problem for me. Although I still have my allergy, at least I have fresh air at a low operating cost.

I did experience a small problem when ordering the unit from Healthy Air and Water Products. I ordered the "Plus" but received the the one without +. The vendor did take care of my complain immediately. He offered me an exchange with no charge. I settled for a credit back on the differences between the two models. Great, no hassle and I don't mind buying from them again.

Blueair 501 Console Air Purifier Review

The Blueair company is a wonderful company to work with and helped settle my issues. I ordered 2 of the 501 units with replacement filters sight unseen based on user reviews. This is a very quality built unit, but the speed settings on the fan are far from usable. The lower speeds barely move enough air, yet the high speed is so noisy that you will think a tornado is in the room with you. The company gladly exchanged my 2 501 units with the 400 series units. The 401 units are far quieter and way more efficient in the way in which it moves the air, so order the 401, you can't go wrong. Keep in mind the 10 year warranty is only applicable if you can prove that you purchased and changed the filters every six months, if not no warranty exists, and the filters are not free, but affordable.In my opinion the 401 is the way to go, stay clear of the 501's due to the noise and air flow design, the Blueair company is second to none in customer support and are highly recommended. Thanks Blueair for helping me get it right....This is one heck of a company that will take care of it's customers. Also keep in mind when you order a Blueair purifier unit, one filter set will come included with the applicable unit that you order. If you order filters, they will be used later for replacements, I wasn't sure when I ordered if the filters were included but they were.

Austin Air Healthmate Replacement Filter w/ Prefilter - Black Review

The filter is fine, but required some aggressive work with a hammer to make it fit my antique model.Compared to the previous replacement filter, this one had metal where the old one had fiberboard.I suppose this would be an upgrade, except that the designer apparently didn't consider the placement of some bolts on my 15 year old Healthmate; hence the need to put some serious dents into the filter.The previous replacement filter had the same problem, but the fiberboard had more give to it.It is my unscientific impression that the new filter is not as quiet out of the box as the previous replacement filter was (based on my 5 year old memory), but maybe it's just my machine getting older; or different room acoustics.Perhaps another owner can offer a second opinion.

Bad enought to pay shipping and a high cost per filter.Was not a 3M filtrete or any type of 3M.It actually didn't have any name.It was more like the fuzzy pleated type that go into your furnace.This company makes custom filters, so you are getting a custom size, generic filter. Too bad they show a picture of a genuine 3M filter online, or I would not have wasted my money and time on this.If you return the filter, you have to cover the return shipping, and the handling cost is non-refundable. I bought this air purifier with the brand of COMEFRESH. It is very nice, because my breathing problem was solved completely.

In the day I use it on my car and in the night I use it in my bedroom.

Also it has 5 stage purification, which I never seen in other car air purifiers. I am thanksful from the designers of this product.

I read another review for this, which discussed about the UV lamp replacement. It is not a major problem, becaus its lifetime is 20,000 hours, which is about 7 years.

A filter that should be replaced every 3 to 6 months and costs 1/3 the price of the whole unit
is not very economical.

Austin Air Allergy Machine Review

I live in an apartment and a few months ago I got new neighbors in the apartment below. They smoke constantly and often have parties with 8-10 people in a tiny apartment all smoking all night. The building is old, the smoke comes through not only the ventilation system, but directly through the floors and fills my apartment with the disgusting stench of Environmental Tobacco Smoke (ETS). This unit saved me from having to move. It's that good.

The HEGA filter is particularly good at removing gas molecules and thus odors and ETS. I have allergies, but they're manageable - I bought this primarily for odor and ETS control and to that end, it works perfectly.

It's much quieter than I though possible for something that moves so much air. Even on the highest setting, I can easily sleep in the same room with it. Some may be more sensitive to noise, but it's much quieter than some IQAir models that I've heard. On the lowest setting, it's barely audible.

I keep the unit in a largish living room/dining room/kitchen area in my one bedroom apartment and it cleans the air effectively. When combined with the air circulation of my AC unit, it does a great job of filling the apartment with clean, smoke free air.

The filters are extremely effective and come with a five-year warranty. Austin Air Allergy Machine Jr. Review

This is the first time I've purchased an air purifier not based on the cadr, so I was a little nervous.But it is great.From day one, the air in my bedroom has smelled very fresh.In addition, I purchased this because of a potential mold problem in my apartment.Since using it, I have experienced less symptoms than before.I like it so much, I'm thinking of purchasing another one for my second floor because the old Hunter I have isn't sufficient.

I would recommend this air purifier to anyone, especially if you have allergies.The only reason I didn't give this a 5-star rating is because it is a little noisy on high (although for normal uses, it probably wouldn't need to always be run on high like I'm doing because of my mold problem).Also, you have to have some place out of the way to put it as it must be set 8 inches from the wall with the air output facing away from the wall.

Amcor AM-40 Air Purifier Review

I recently bought two AMCOR air purifiers, the AM-90, and this purifier, the AM-40.I was impressed with both, AMCOR makes cheap but solid products.Usually good air purifiers run hundreds of dollars but these purifiers get the job done for much less.If your on a budget, and need a dusty basement made breathable (what I used the AM-90 for) it works for that.I used the AM-40 in my bedroom.I did not notice as much of effect as the AM-90, but the filters in the AM-40 did pick up dust, and the air is a little easier to breath in the bedroom.For a big room or a really dusty room, I would spend the extra 50 bucks and get the AM-90.

Just as a side note, I was unable to find the square footage the AM-90 covered until after I bought the product, when I was reading the manual.Its 400 sq feet.The AM-40 is a much smaller purifier, it works for a small to midsize room.

I own two of these air filters and I love them.These air filters do an excellent job of cleaning the air in relatively short order and I keep these air filters in the bedrooms for clean air sleeping.I recently moved into a older house that has dirty HVAC ducting and while I am slowly cleaning those ducts out I needed a temporary fix.Additionally, I own a dog that sheds a lot and I have a child with severe allergies.Additionally, I am also an allergy sufferer (mold and cats). After doing extensive research on air filters, I decided to go with this Honeywell 50100 HEPA filter.There are a couple of reasons for decision.1) The overall cost of this filter is the lowest (unit + replacement filters) I found at the time.I bought the unit for around $80. The average HEPA filter replacement is around $20. 2) The second reason I bought this unit is that I like noise.This is not one of those whisper quiet HEPA filters and that is OK by me. I am a big fan of white noise (after all I have two kids that like to get up early and make noise).This unit on its lowest setting is fairly quiet.However, the medium setting is loud and the high setting sounds like a jet passing overhead.Most of the time I have the unit set on medium. This is loud enough to drown out the garbage man picking up trash at 4 am.I have been happy with Honeywell products in the past and this is no exception.I also own a larger Honeywell HEPA filter that uses the same filter type as these units so I buy them in bulk.These filters also use a prefilter that goes around the outside of the HEPA filter.Using this filter extends the life of the HEPA filter tremendously.I vacuum the prefilter every couple of months or so.I recommend this filter to anyone who appreciates a well made decently priced HEPA filtration unit and doesn't mind a bit of noise.

I bought my first Holmes HEPA air filtering machine more than a decade ago, and have been satisfied enough not to have bought any other brand since then, although I have had four Holmes air filter machines since then.

The first model I bought (I think it was the 220) is apparently discontinued, but it would be no exageration to call it a life-saver.I bought my first one because I lived in a house with a HEAVY chain smoker.Even though rated for only a single small room, that little sucker grabbed enormous amounts of smoke and the white paper on the filter blackened within weeks from particulate cancer-causing material which it saved me from inhaling.The next two filter machines I bought for a house which was infested with black mold.The one closest to the worst mold area blackened very quickly, while the second one, further from the mold, only grayed somewhat in the same time period -- the filter was very obviously cleaning potentially deadly black mold spores from the air.

The model I have now uses the HAPF30 replacement, and it is doing "light duty" compared to the first three I owned.I would have given this five stars except that I have the very distinct impression that this particular filter replacement is less efficient than the earlier ones I owned -- the filter has grayed with use, but I don't have the impression that the color change has been due entirely to grabbing airborne pollutants; I suspect (but don't have any evidence) that the filter is catching carbon which is being blown forward by the fan or else is catching dust which the negative ions generated by the machine itself have caused to fall.

Despite my suspicion that this is less efficient than earlier models, I still rate it four stars because I know that it is filtering SOMETHING out of the air, and I trust the Holmes brand -- they have earned my confidence through many years of arduous work.(I've never experienced any mechanical problems with one, either, until long, long after the warranty has expired.These things are real workhorses.)If the fans on the machines are kept to low settings they are fairly quiet, but at high speed they genrate quite a bit of noise, which can be a blessing in itself since the machine can act as a "white noise" generator to mask *noise* pollution, too.

Pros:

THIS IS MADE BY KAZ USA.Interesting they rarely brand their items with their own name.OVER A YR AND A HALF AGO, they bought SLANT FIN PURI-CLEAR 55 business, the perfect air purifier for a nursery.SO FAR, THEY REFUSE TO MAKE FILTERS.GUESS THEY EXPECT FOLKS TO CAVE and buy this thing instead. DON'T DO IT. The air purifier ability is sub-par.With the SLANT FIN- the 3M Filtrete dual pre filter did an EXCELLENT JOB.With this it just didn't work as well and with this thing there is a "washable" filter.COME ON.The footprint is also larger and the unit is more noisy.

IF KAZ had any sense they would continue to make the superior product they bought from SLANT FIN!But wait, this is KAZ, they like to buy BRANDS and then cheapen them. FOLKS think they are buying quality because the brand has such a good reputation but hold on, the brand is just a badge, the actual product is KAZ.

Out of desperation (since KAZ refuses to make filters for the Slant Fin I have used for years with total satisfaction) I found a store that sold their 'comparable' unit, figured I should at least see WHY KAZ refuses to make the SLANT FIN! The VICKS purifier won't be coming to my home!My advice - stay away from anything KAZ'd.

Wish I had the money to buy the rights to the SLANT FIN and get that CHINESE manufacturer making filters! One last note: KAZ marketing campaign for this unit neglects to inform that ionizers should be turned off in a nursery -personally I think they are a BAD IDEA ALL TOGETHER, they create ozone and can harm us.Not a great idea for a nursery at all or anyone at any age with breathing issues or anyone who wishes to stay clear of developing breathing issues.The Slant Fin had lights in the face plate so one could easily know the ionizer was OFF. This thing has some dial on the top of it. Lastly, the SLANT FIN had a compartment to accept a fragrance pouch, a wonderful idea, even if used only ocassionally.This product doesn't have that feature. Rabbit Air MinusA2 ultra-quiet Air Purifier - Sylish, Efficient and Energy Star® Certified (SPA-700A) Review

I wanted to post this review mainly because there is no real comparison between Rabbit Air MinusA2 (covers 700 sq. ft.) Ultra-Quiet Air Purifier - 6 Stage Filtration! - built in Mood Light and the Rabbit Air BioGP (model 582A - covers 780 sq. ft.) Ultra-Quiet Air Purifier w/ Germicidal Protection- Low Maintenance - Washable Filters!, Pearl White out there. This is to give you an idea if you're making a choice between the two. [...]

I first purchased the 582A but returned it after a few months of usage due to some minor defect for an exchange with MinusA2 (RabbitAir support was extremely helpful). As a result I have experience with both of these units. The main reason I purchased an Air Purifier was dust elimination and for that particular purpose in mind both these products exceeded my expectations.

In the order of importance for me, these are the differences:
- As I am posting this review MinusA2 is $[...] more expensive than 582A. So why should you even consider MinusA2? Read on...

- Filtering:
(a) MinusA2 has 2 more levels of filtering. The Medium Filter (which filters medium sized particles and increases the efficiency/lifespan of the main HEPA filter) and a Customized Filter of your choice.
(b) On the other hand although RabbitAir boasts about the benefits of BioGP HEPA filters over the regular HEPA filters on their website, it's not clear if the MinusA2 HEPA filter is also BioGP (yet it's made by 3M and looks high quality). The price of the 582A's HEPA filter is more expensive. I am not sure if this is due to the surface area or because 582A's filter is really more effective.

- Noise level: This is where MinusA2 shines due to its more efficient new engine.
(a) I was pleasantly surprised to find out MinusA2 improves quite a bit over already very silent 582A. To compare at different speeds the noise and Clean Air Flow, check the Features tab in RabbitAir's own website for each product.
(b) I am not sure how RabbitAir calculates the sq ft. coverage but I run these units at the highest speed for which noise is acceptable (~ about 30dB in my opinion). Consequently I can run MinusA2 at Medium speed producing 97 Cubic Feet/min of clean air as opposed to 582A's Low speed producing 85 Cubic Feet/min.

- Area of coverage: Although 582A is rated at 780 sq ft. versus 700 sq ft. of MinusA2, if you check the Features tab for each product on RabbitAir's website you'll find out that MinusA2's clean air output is generally higher at the same speed setting as well as its CADR (clean air delivery rate) rating. I imagine RabbitAir's sq ft. calculation is based on the maximum setting in which 582A outputs 208 Cubic Feet/min vs 187 Cubic Feet/min of MinusA2. However I think this is unrealistic and I doubt many of you will choose to use it at the highest setting due to high energy consumption and noise.

- Design and build quality: MinusA2 wins this comparison by far.
(a) I must say though that there's room for improvement for both of these products. For both of them the plastic construction looks a bit cheap although this is more apparent with 582A. I wish their build were metallic.
(b) However MinusA2 is quite handsome overall with its square lines.
(c) It could also be wall mounted.
(d) One more thing I'd like to mention is I really liked the tiny remote of 582A. I think MinusA2's remote is not only less functional but is bulkier for no reason. I also miss 582A's the tiny remote control pocket behind the unit which reduced remote control clutter in the house.
(e) By the way although the mood light of MinusA2 adds to its cool looks, I believe RabbitAir's own claim of the Mood Light "helping normalize blood pressure, pulse, and facilitate deep breathing blah blah" is total nonsense. I think this sounds totally unscientific and if anything has negative influence on my view of RabbitAir as a honest company with high quality products. Also you will find out that you can't change the color of this light as you wish (based on your mood) but the unit sets that itself (based on its own mood).

- Energy consumption: MinusA2 consumes between 8 to 47 Watts whereas 582A consumes between 7 to 67 Watts. I believe the lower consumption of MinusA2 is due to the newer generation Mitsubishi engine employed. Therefore you can expect lower energy usage if you plan to run the unit at anything beyond the Silent setting.

- Sensors:
(a) Note that MinusA2 does not have an odor sensor although 582A has. I think this is quite useful with 582A and I don't understand why RabbitAir chose to drop this from MinusA2.
(b) On the other hand MinusA2 has a light sensor. Certainly it does not help to do a better air purification, but if you're using the Auto mode then the unit goes to the Silent setting automatically a few mins after the lights are dimmed. I think this should've been optional even in the Auto mode but it's a useful feature nevertheless.
(c) The particle sensor of MinusA2 looks more elaborate and I imagine it does a better job.
(d) Furthermore MinusA2 has adjustable sensor sensitivity. This is extremely useful, and the reason I returned 582A was because the sensors of the unit I received was simply too sensitive and was changing from "clean" to "very dirty" for no apparent reason in a split second (during late nights etc when there was no virtual change in room conditions).

Overall I think MinusA2 is a great unit and improves on the already impressive 582A. I thought it's worth the price difference. I already ordered a new one after RabbitAir customer support said they could give me a discount for an additional unit.
