Slant/Fin Puri-Clear 55 Air Purifier Replacement Filter Pack - 1 ea Review

OK. Time to buy my yearly supply of filters.Had my purifier for many years. Loved it. UNTIL NOW.The filters arrived.No box.Just celaphaned flat filters/prefilters labelled "RFPC55".Trouble was, the filter looked NOTHING and I repeat NOTHING like the Slant/Fin filter combo I have used for many years.This Filters-Now Company claimed the filters they sent me were superior to the Slant/Fin replacement filters I ordered.

Differences included:
1. no foam sleeve for the filter.
2. Slant/Fin filter is porous flexible filter (similar to my vacuum's pre-hepa filter)encased in a porous foam sleeve. It is made by 3M and called Filtrete.The Filters-Now "replacement" filter has some sort of multi strand fiber material glued or burned to each side of the flexible filter (instead of encasing the filter entirely in a foam sleeve); this means the filter is exposed on all edges and the filter is very hard.I wondered if there are any gas off effects to be considered with these replacement filters. Also wondered how glue or burning this strand stuff to the filter affects the ability of the filter to actually process air.
3. The Slant/Fin prefilter has a super fine micro-perforated pellon like sleeve- reminds me of the outer casement of a breathable medical gauze pad. The inside looks like fine layers of cotton- not glued at all-think loose cotton ball material laid very flat. It has some sort of activated carbon properties to it.The Filters-Now prefilter appears to be only a single layer of some sort of denser cotton like material- reminds me of batting, close to a 1/16th of an inch thick, perforated on one side (I did not take it out of its celaphane wrapper, as it will be returned shortly). I see no carbon activated material at all.
4. Both are too small.The width is 1/4 inch too small and the length is between a 1/2 and 5/8 inch too small. I believe the reason for the difference was the substitution of the glued or burned on fiber strand stuff instead of the foam sleeve used by Slant/Fin (or whoever made their replacement filters)and the omission of the pellon sleeve on the prefilter.Of course that is just a guess. Regardless of the why, the directions for the Slant/Fin replacement filters found on the box say this -
"Install new filters in housing. Install with white filter inside; foam filter covers white filter. Be sure both ends form a proper seal to prevent air from bypassing filter". The Slant/Fin replacements fit tight! These Filters-Now filters had no instructions, no box, and by their own design create bypassing areas. I had to ask myself - What sort of air will result?Could ill-fitting filters possibly create a shorter life for the device overall?

I phoned Filters-Now as soon as I opened this package and saw they were completely different from what I expected! They claimed their filters are "superior" to Slant/Fin's. They also claimed Slant/Fin "went out of business".According to Slant/Fin, they did NOT go out of business; they SOLD this particular air purifier business to KAZ USA INC.KAZ claims they will be making filters for this purifier but they do not have a firm production schedule yet. They guessimated it would be three months. I have no idea how long ago Slant Fin sold this purifier business.

In my book, if something doesn't fit properly, I can't count it as "superior".What I can't quite figure out is why this company did not immediately offer for UPS to pick their stuff up and provide me with a credit for the entire amount, including shipping! I hope this is not going to get ugly. After all, clearly I ordered in good faith. For heavens sake, the Amazon page has a photo of the same Slant/Fin replacement filter box I have ordered before! Nowhere does the description alert a customer that the item will differ from the photo'd item! I am awaiting a phone call tomorrow from this company.

For the record, the only thing I found superior was Filters-Now unit price!

Honeywell 17000 HEPA QuietCare Air Cleaner Review

I use this HEPA machine in my bedroom 24/7.It's helped dramatically with my many allergies (I just found out the allergies are causing my asthma that I've had for 9 months).
The only gripe I have with this machine is that it states that it's "Quietcare".On high, this thing is pretty loud!
However, I had a more inexpensive model (I think it was Honeywell 50010) and it was deafening, so this is an improvement.
Otherwise, this machine is giving me EXCELLENT results.I can sleep through the night without my eyes watering or dry mouth.It's improved my breathing (my family tells me 'I sound better') and helped with my snoring problems.At the price they're selling it for here, I'd pick one up.If noise bothers you just keep it on the low setting.
It really is a good product!

IQAir HealthPro Plus Air Cleaner Review

This is the gas and odor filter for the IQAir Healthpro PLUS. You can upgrade a HealthPro to a Plus (check IQAir's website for details). I just got the Plus to start with, and my wife and I are glad we spent the extra money upfront.
The filters seem pricey. THEY AREN'T. The filters last a stupefyingly long time. It filters some 200 gases including VOCs. I just used the filter to easily clear the air in minutes after spraying some Bissell carpet cleaner that has a ungodly strong "scent".
An IQAir Healthpro Plus saved my wife and I from suffering while several brush fires over the past few years have lapped at our neighborhood. Before having the IQAir, we both suffered gravely whenever brush fires were anywhere within 50 miles.

Blueair 402 Air Purification System Review

After reading reviews a number of places online, I decided to buy the Blueair products.In ended up sampling the 402, 501 and 601, and ultimately returned the 501 and 601 and replaced them with 402s.

The 402 is truly quiet.This was an important consideration for me; the reason I returned the 501 and 601 was because they were noisy.The 402 has four fan speed settings.The fastest is unpleasantly noisy; I would not want to be in the room while the unit is in this mode.The next fastest, though, is *much* quieter.We usually leave the units in this mode.Sometimes we use the next-to-slowest mode, for example when I'm watching a movie and sitting in a chair right next to the 402.The middle two speeds are sufficiently quiet that I never feel like I need to use the slowest speed.(The 501s and 601s are unbearably noisy at any but the slowest setting - which is slower than the middle speeds of the 402.For 2/3 the price you can move more air, more quietly.Go figure.)

The only downside to the unit is size.It is about the same size as a tower PC.It's tall enough not to easily fit under furniture, and it's airflow pattern (in one of the skinny vertical sides, out the opposite side) means that the best placement is with one of the long sides against a wall.If wall space is at a premium, it can be hard to find a place to put it.

I haven't had the units long enough to replace the filters yet, but I have taken out the filters that came with them, and put them back in.It was very easy to do.After two months, only one filter is showing any visible dirt - but the house is *much* less dusty.

Blueair ECO10 Energy-Star HEPASilent Air Purifier Review

This is the first air purifier I ever purchased.I jumped at the chance to buy it at the 50% off sale price or $450. So far it's working really well.It's a bit bulky, but then all good air purifiers are because the filters need enough surface area to work properly.It achieves low power consumption largely by having a large filter area so that the air velocity can be kept low while keeping the air volume high.Low air velocity translates to lower energy consumption and lower noise.

At 10 Watts on the high setting, even if I run it 24/7, the energy consumption will be only $1 a month and my electricity rate in California is a high 14 cents per kWh.

The outside of the product's packaging, as well as all the websites I've visited(including Amazon), says the filters last up to 12 months.That's actually incorrect advertising.The manual says for "optimal use" the filters should be changed every six months.I've noticed the air flow decreased noticeably after 2 months of use at 12 hours a day. Furthermore, in order for the 10-year warranty to be valid, Blueair requires the buyer to change the filters every six months and to send in the registration as explicitly stated in the manual.Of course, the question is whether Blueair will require proof that the user bought new filters every six months when it comes time for warranty work.Oh, another thing, the warranty is only 10 years, not "lifetime" as the websites state, another incorrect advertisement!

The filters cost $100 per set.So if I change the filters religiously every 6 months, the filters alone will cost $200 a year, plus $12 a year for electricity.With charcoal, the operating cost will exceed $300 a year.Ouch!Also, keep in mind that this is just the operating cost for one large room (up to 300 sq. ft.) and not for the whole house.

It's quiet enough even on high that I can sleep with it on high, and on the low setting, it sounds about as loud as a somewhat loud computer case fan and is mostly unobtrusive.The fan noise is not unpleasant.In fact, I sometimes use it on the high setting as a passable white noise machine to drown out ambient noises when I go to sleep.

The only true negative with this unit is it's exclusively a particulates filter.It has no charcoal to absorb odor.In order for the purifier to be effective, I need to keepmy bedroom door closed. When the filters were new, the air got stuffy overnight when I kept the door closed.I think it was the smell of the new filters, but after a couple of weeks, the stuffy smell went away.For those who want to filter odor, Blueair makes Smokestop filters include charcoal.The Smokestop filters cost almost twice as much as the regular Eco10 filters and are also not as readily available.

It's interesting to note that the Eco10 has virtually the same 250 CFM rating as the IQAir Heatlh Pro and practically the same percentage particulate reduction.Therefore the two units should have about the same area coverage rating.But the IQAir claims effective up to 900 sq. feet, whereas the Blueair Eco10 only claims 300 sq. ft. with 6 air changes per hour(which is the generally recommended rate by experts).This tells me the IQAir's capacity is overrated vs. the conservative rating of the Eco10.I tried to find the CADR rating of the IQAir but couldn't find it anywhere.Based on the fact that the Blueair Eco10 has a CADR of about 200, I surmise the IQAir has similar CADR.I just don't see how a 200 CADR unit can cover 900 sq. ft.Maybe that's why Consumer Report gave the IQAir a low rating.

Summary:

Pluses:very quiet compared to other brands, very effective filtration down to 0.1 micron at 99.97% efficiency, good air flow of around 250 CFM, good CADR rating of around 200, ultra low electricity consumption.

Minuses:short filter life, very high operating costs because of short filter life and expensive filters, no charcoal to absorb odors, unless you opt for the even more expensive Smokestop filters.

Bottomline:Quiet unit, BUT energy savings will not even come close to offsetting the high operating costs associated with the frequent changes of expensive filters.

Hunter 30730 Quietflo HEPA Small-Tower, Three-Speed Air Purifier with Ionizer Review

I bought this primarily to reduce pollen in the air to keep my allergies under control. It seems to have helped, and I've found it is also great at eliminating pet odors (if I don't run it, the room starts to smell like our dog).

The filter replacement indicator is helpful, and the filters last a reasonable length of time.

I run it on low most of the time, which seems to be enough for it to do its job. It's not whisper quiet on low, but I find the noise level acceptable and I sleep with it running right next to my bed. Medium and high speeds are quite noisy and therefore I use them only to try to clear an odor in a hurry.

The first number is the Air Purifier series followed by the # of filters required in parenthesis. The last, right number is for the HEPA filter model # it replaces:

As another reviewer has already noted, this is not really a 'permanent' filter because it must be replaced every 3-5 years under normal use, just like the non-permanent filter that originally came with the air cleaner.

I'm giving it 4 stars for two reasons: 1. Because I really do not find a difference in the way this works yet compared to the filter that came with my 17000; and 2. My machine requires two of these so the air actually goes through less HEPA material than the one-piece filter that came with the machine [casing and spacer where HEPA material would be if a one piece filter]. Only time will tell if I have to replace this sooner than I would for a one piece filter (yearly) due to it's usage in a room with a wood stove.

We recently moved into a home with some mold issues.They were minor, but they were there none the less.

From day one in the home, I began waking up every morning with a migraine. After about a week straight of this, I decided I needed to try something to alleviate what I suspected to be the issue. I began researching products that killed mold and mildew in the air, and with a limited budget and after a LOT of research, I settled on the Germ Guardian Tabletop Air Purifier.I am hooked!Hooked, hooked, hooked! I cannot tell you for sure that it was this item, but it has been over a week now with no migraine - not even a hint.

Furthermore, I have been taking nasal medication for about 4 years to keep me from snoring at night.Even with the medication, I would wake up most mornings with at least one of my nasal passages plugged or partially plugged. I'm 5'10" 175, so it's not a weight issue.Since we plugged in this machine, I have woken up clean and clear.I even slept last night without my nasal medication just to check, and I slept great.

I will be the first to say that it has only been a week, but I am amazed at the results...so far. I will say that this unit is a little noisy, but for me, it is a no brainer trade off: health vs. a little noise - I'll take the noise! We run the unit 24/7 with it on low during the day and on high during the night. We also run our ceiling fan on low to keep the air in the room circulating so that we are sure that the unit has a chance to cleanse the entire room.

Blueair Smokestop Filter for 402 Air Purifier Review

You're probably completely shocked that this Smokestop Filter costs as much as it does. But trust me, if you have any problems with odors, it's worth EVERY penny.

I normally use the regular Blueair filter for the 402, but I purchased the Smokestop after my neighborhood was flooded with horrible fumes from a nearby methane gas leak. The authorities deemed the gases as harmless, so no evacuations were ordered. However, being very sensitive to fumes of any kind, I became very ill. With no other place to go, I put the Smokestop filter into my 402 and moved the air cleaner into my smallest bedroom, where I camped out for the next couple of days. A trip to any other room of the house left me feeling nauseous, dizzy, with a raging headache and difficulty breathing within minutes (but the fumes were "harmless"!!). The room with the Blueair equipped with the Smokestop filter was absolutely free of odor. It was incredible.

Since not everyone has methane gas leaks permeating their homes (thankfully!), you may never get the chance to test the filter in this way. But it no doubt works wonders with cigarette smoke and other offensive odors that waft into your home.

The filter has 2 "chambers." One filled with activated charcoal, and the other with the familiar Blueair patented white filter. So it doesn't just stop with odors, it still cleans particles from the air with great efficiency, and best of all, Q-U-I-E-T-ly. Just remember to change it after 6 months, even if it means going back to the regular (and cheaper) filter. Happy breathing!

SEPT. 2008 ADDENDUM: I had another fume problem, this time, toxic deck sealant fumes from a home repair seeping into the house. I purchased another Smokestop filter and this time I noticed an odor coming from the filter itself. It's not horrible, but I had become so sensitive to odors after a week of sealant exposure that it made me feel sick. I left the Blueair on high and it has reduced the smell after a few days. To be fair, despite the filter smell, the deck sealant odor was neutralized. And finally, I have a balcony-smoking neighbor, and as soon as secondhand smoke wafts into my bedroom, I turn up the Blueair and the smoke odor is gone in a flash. Just be aware of the initial odor from the filter itself. I'd say I'm dropping my rating to 4 stars, or 3.8 if I could.

Advanced Pure Air Newport 9000 Air Purifier Review

Shopping for the right air cleaner in my opinion is more of a challange than shopping for a new car. I studied most all of them and found that there are many con-games going on with cleaver advertise schemes. I ended up purchasing both Newport 9000 and the Sharp FP-N60CX because I couldn't decide. And I love both. It has been six months and they are on all the time -- contineous. I have four large dogs, the air is fresh and my girfriend with dog allergies is doing fine. I have found both reliable economical and working as advertised. I use the Newport in the larger living-room and the Sharp in the bedroom. They both appear to be on the leading edge of technology sampling the air and automatically adjust. Both are operating in the automatic mode day and night -- noise is not a problem. I am completely impressed with this machine. I did a lot of research of air purifiers and finally settled on the HunterFan 30124. This item was intended to help clear an 11x11 bedroom from allergens as well as refresh stagnate air. It does not disappoint. The air is clean and odorless in just a few hours of initial use. There is a very natural feel to the room as well. My allergies have considerably improved as a result of running this machine on low. How does it sound? Well I can't even hear it from six feet away on the low setting. On it's medium setting you definitely hear it running, but it isn't a motor sound or a hum, it's just like a box fan. The high setting is the same as the medium only a bit more forceful. You begin to hear the hum. It doesn't rattle. I bought mine at iallergy.com and had an amazing experience. It's $94.00 shipping included. I had two day delivery and prompt friendly phone and email service. I'm particularly impressed with the high CADR ratings. A note on this though...This particular air purifier works in a 15x17 room, and I have mine in an 11x11. What this does is allow you to run the machine at low and avoid any noise on the medium setting (not that it is overly bothersome at that speed). Also, when you kick it up to medium or high, the refresh rate is super fast. Now, GO GET ONE and make your lungs happy!

Alright, so I just bought this so I can't say much about reliability, but I had to post a review online because I'm incredibly impressed with they way my apartment smells now. I have 2 cats, and litterbox odor is a big problem for me...I'm a neat freak, and I can't stand anything that smells dirty so I went out and bought this to help take care of the issue.

And this is really the best part.I CAN'T EVEN TELL I HAVE CATS ANYMORE. Yes, it's that good. Granted, there's a bit of a rubbery smell because the filters are new, but it'll fade in time. All I did was put it in the same room as the litterbox, turn it on HIGH for about 5 minutes, and the smell was gone. I've since switched it down to low and let it run, and the room smells like it did when I moved in.

Another great thing about this unit is the filters are permanent, which means you never have to buy more. Just pull them out and wash them when the light comes on (yes, it tells you when to clean the filter). That basically pays for itself in a year or two if you look at the price of filters in comparable units.

I will say that it's not the most quiet unit, especially on high, but medium is tolerable and low is barely noticeable if you're in the same room.

Air purifiers have come a long way in terms of design and technology. I've gone thru the simple HEPA filters, charcoal filter, UV bulbs, electrostatic ionizers, washable collector cells, and controversial ozone emitting products.

Now I'm down to two in my home one of which is the RabbitAir MinusA2 air purifier. I love it's stylish design that doesn't look boring, kitschy, or even gimmicky. I can place it in any part of my home and it doesn't look like an eyesore.

PROS:

1. Design - slim and modern

2. Controls - chrome-like buttons all laid out on one side

3. Remote - a small plastic remote emulating all the chrome buttons on the unit that is especially useful if you decide to hang the unit on a wall

4. Mood Light / Night Light - a horizontal strip of light in the front of the unit which contributes to the ambiance in the home.

5. Technology -

a. Silver Ion Pre-Filter - washable filter similar to A/C units with a fine mesh weave that capture large dust
particles. RabbitAir goes one step further by coating it with silver ions which have been proven to retard or even eliminate bacteria growth.

b. Anti-Bacterial Medium Filter - which appears to be a blue cotton filter and captures finer dust particles, pollen, mold and bacteria.

c. BioGS HEPA filter - (technology found on the previous BioGS models) and captures even more of the above plus fungus, dust mites, odours, smoke and greenhouse gases.

d. Customized Filter - another stage in filtration to specifically tailor to your choice of "Germ Defense", "Pet Allergy" and "Toxin Absorber".

e. Charcoal Based Activated Carbon Filter - the final stage in filtration in an old reliable charcoal filtration method that helps absorb more odours and toxins.

All of the above filters are housed in a relatively sturdy filter case which helps organize and arrange these for easy removal and replacement.

f. Negative Ion Generator - which further helps purify the air by clinging to suspended particles that haven't passed thru the filter and essentially making them fall to the floor rather than float around.

g. Brushless Motor - essentially produces a longer motor life and a quiet operation due to a friction-less design.

6. Filter Life / Cost - Less time consuming and relatively less expensive replacement method by being able to operate for a year in between changes. Of course, regular monthly maintenance is recommended by vacuuming and/or washing the pre-filter as well as cleaning the vents and odour analyzer.

7. Function -

a. Odour Sensor - a vent on the right side that detects changes in air quality and adjusts fan speed accordingly for faster air purification. Of course, effective placement of the air purifier matters for a more effective operation.

b. Light Sensor - detects available light and shuts down the mood light (if used) and air quality indicator.

c. Air Quality Indicator - gives a visual indication of present air quality by changing from blue (good) to purple, pink and then red (bad).

d. Easy front panel removal - no clumsy clips here. Elegant magnet on the bottom and a simple latch on top to facilitate easy pre-filter cleaning and filter replacement.CONS:

My gripe is the filter replacement cost. As of this writing the marketing of the filter can last "up to two years". If you further read the manual and manufacturer FAQ, this of course means operating the unit non-continuously at only 12 hours a day. But RabbitAir has stated this on their website FAQ:

Q: Why should I run my air purifier continuously?

A:To be truly effective, ALL air purifiers should be run continuously. Scientific researches confirm that indoor air pollution rapidly returns to pretreatment levels when an air purifier is turned off.

To truly benefit from the air purifier, then it is a no-brainer to operate it for 24 hours a day (unless it's on a vacation home that sees traffic a few times a year). Which means under "normal use" then filter life is really good for a year. Replacement cost then amounts to $75 a year plus shipping and taxes, where applicable. I would have preferred the manufacturers offer discounted filter service and free shipping KNOWING that loyal customers will be replacing their filters anyway at this predictable time frame.

Throw us a bone and make it more convenient so we won't go looking for other air purifiers down the road.OVERALL:

I would recommend this product with it's higher quality manufacturing and design that sets it apart from other air purifiers. Are the air filters with it's multi-stage redundant layers gimmicky? I don't know. Independent reviews and studies (not provided by the manufacturer) will prove in time. And it does beat simple one-layer filters of other machines, well, at a higher price to pay.

Of course, air purifier manufacturers will tell you that "there is no price to pay for your health". Well there certainly is a price to pay for buying these purifiers and if RabbitAir can improve their product filter replacement cost down the road and independent studies can prove the performance of their filters, then we definitely have a winner in the MinusA2 model.

As for which model to buy - SPA-780A or SPA-700A. I can only say that they are exactly the same on the outside as well as filter replacement parts. The only difference is a more powerful motor to help cover a wider space and essentially guarantee up to 815 sq feet of area as well as a choice of glossy black or glossy white. Choose well.

IQAir AM GCX Air Cleaner Review

There is no magical, cheap, silent, super-energy efficient way to REALLY clean air. PERIOD. There are only measured compromises.
The IQAir is the absolute best air cleaner available to the public. It makes a bit of noise, but very, very little for the massive volume of air. It uses a bit of electricity, but it takes power to pump air through such absolutely, ridiculously, fabulously purifying multi-stage filters. THINK about it.
The filters seem pricey. THEY AREN'T. The filters last a stupefyingly long time. They are huge and thick--everything they need to be, to stop greater than 99% of .003 micron particulates, plus the huge .3 micron particules that make the filters HEPA certified. Just try to picture the difference--a thousand times smaller. That's like the difference in size between a b-b and a 15 foot diameter ball (if they exist). If you spend a bit more, you get gas filtering too. Spend a little more and get yourself a cleanroom certified IQAir, if you need it.
An IQAir Healthpro Plus saved my wife and I from suffering while several brush fires over the past few years have lapped at our neighborhood. Before having the IQAir, we both suffered gravely whenever brush fires were anywhere within 50 miles.
After two years of us raving about our IQAir, our next door neighbors (asthma sufferers) sought refuge in our home during the last fire which was a couple miles upwind and within sight of our house. I purchased this unit for my commute to work using public transportation.

I've had some pretty serious allergy problems since I was little. Up until about month ago they were driving me crazy. I was taking Clariton every morning and still suffering. I was desperate so I picked up the Vornado Air Purifier and the results were instant. When I wake up in the morning I no longer have a stuffy nose and my throat is no longer sore.
I stopped taking Clariton and while I do occasionally have an allergy attack it never happens inside the house.

This fan is perfect for my bed room at any time.I needed a nice fan for sleeping and this works perfect, level one blows just enough air onto me for a great breeze and sleep.The fan is super quiet for the amount of air it pushes,no fan will ever be silent.You cant hear the motor at all.totally worth it!

i attached the video to hear the fan on each setting.The video starts on setting 1 then when it beeps it goes to level 2 then the next beep is level 3 . about 10 secs apart for each setting.the camera is 2 feet away and not directly on the wind path

This air purifier works amazingly. We plugged it in and within 30 minutes there was honestly a change in the air quality. The air felt crisper and fresher. My husband and daughter have been getting sick a lot less and sneezing a lot less. There is also increased circulation in the room we have it in, and it is powerful enough to work in kitchen and living room, which are open to each other by a doorway and bar cutout. Even at the highest setting it is very quiet, quieter than a fan running on low. We don't even pay attention to it. I would highly recommend this product over any other air purifier.
